Paying for nursing school

How to Pay for Nursing School Without Debt

No single award covers everything. Nurses who finish debt-light usually stack free money first, let an employer carry part of the cost, and borrow last, with a plan to repay.

Seven moves, in order

File the FAFSA every year

It's free and it's the door to Pell Grants (up to $7,395 for 2026-27, per the sponsor's site as of Nov 2026), Federal Work-Study and most school scholarships.

Let an employer pay for the first credential

Nursing homes that take Medicare or Medicaid can't charge nurse aides they employ, or have offered a job, for CNA training. Hospitals often offer tuition help for the next step.

Use employer tuition help, tax-free

Under IRS rules, up to $5,250 a year of employer educational assistance can be tax-free, covering tuition, fees, books and supplies. The 2026 IRS guide says it can also cover payments on your own qualified student loans, now permanently.

Stack association scholarships

Smaller awards from groups like NBNA, NAHN and DAR add up and come with no work commitment. Most require membership first.

Consider a service scholarship

Nurse Corps pays tuition, fees, costs and a stipend if you'll work at a critical shortage facility after graduating. NHSC and IHS work similarly for eligible students.

Work while you study, if you can

Federal Work-Study jobs pay at least the federal minimum wage and are scheduled around your classes, with an emphasis on work related to your studies.

Have a plan for any loans you do take

If you work for a government or nonprofit employer, such as many hospitals, Public Service Loan Forgiveness forgives remaining Direct Loans after 120 qualifying payments. Nurse Corps Loan Repayment pays up to 85% for service.

Employer tuition reimbursement

How employer tuition help works for nurses

Many hospitals and health systems help employees pay for school. The tax rules come from Section 127 of the tax code, which the IRS explains in Publication 15-B: an employer's written educational assistance program can give you up to $5,250 a year without it counting as taxable income.

Questions to ask HR before you enroll:

  • Is it paid upfront, or reimbursed after you pass each course?
  • Which programs and schools qualify, and is there a grade minimum?
  • Do you have to keep working there for a set time afterward, and what happens if you leave early?
  • Does the plan also pay toward existing student loans?

These terms vary by employer. Get them in writing.

Before you apply anywhere: the FTC's scam warning signs

  • Fees. The FTC's advice is never to pay to apply for a scholarship. A "processing" or "redemption" fee is a red flag.
  • Guarantees. No legitimate program guarantees you'll win, or offers your money back.
  • Paid FAFSA help. The FAFSA is free. Don't pay anyone to file it, and never share your FSA ID.
  • Bank details "to confirm eligibility." Real sponsors don't need your card or account number to consider you.
  • Surprise "finalist" notices for awards you never applied for, and seminars that pressure you to pay on the spot.
