How to Get CNA Training Paid For

Nurse aide training is short and often employer-funded. Federal rules even protect aides from paying for training in some cases. Here's where the money for a CNA course actually comes from.

The federal rule most CNA students never hear about

Federal regulations for nursing homes that take Medicare or Medicaid (42 CFR 483.152) say that a nurse aide who is employed by, or has a job offer from, a facility on the day they start a training and competency evaluation program can't be charged for any part of it, including textbooks and required materials.

The same section covers people who pay their own way: if you're hired by a facility within 12 months of finishing, the state must provide for reimbursement of your costs on a pro rata basis while you work as a nurse aide.

In practice: ask local nursing homes about paid or free CNA classes before you pay tuition, and keep every receipt if you do pay.

About Pell for short programs: the Department of Education says Pell usually goes to undergraduates in degree programs, but notes that students in an eligible workforce program might receive one. Ask the school's aid office whether its CNA program qualifies.
Step by step

A low-cost path to your CNA

Call nursing homes first

Ask whether they hire trainees or sponsor classes. If you have a job offer before you start, federal rules say you can't be charged for the program.

Visit an American Job Center

WIOA Adult funds can pay for training, with priority for people on public assistance and other low-income individuals. Services vary by state.

File the FAFSA if you're enrolling at a college

Even if the CNA course isn't Pell-eligible, the FAFSA sets you up for aid when you move on to an LPN or RN program.

Ask about tuition help once you're hired

Many employers help CNAs continue to LPN or RN, and up to $5,250 a year of that help can be tax-free under IRS rules.

Before you apply anywhere: the FTC's scam warning signs

  • Fees. The FTC's advice is never to pay to apply for a scholarship. A "processing" or "redemption" fee is a red flag.
  • Guarantees. No legitimate program guarantees you'll win, or offers your money back.
  • Paid FAFSA help. The FAFSA is free. Don't pay anyone to file it, and never share your FSA ID.
  • Bank details "to confirm eligibility." Real sponsors don't need your card or account number to consider you.
  • Surprise "finalist" notices for awards you never applied for, and seminars that pressure you to pay on the spot.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I get my CNA training for free?

Often, yes. Under 42 CFR 483.152, a nursing home that takes Medicare or Medicaid can't charge an aide it employs, or has offered a job, for training that starts after the offer. If you pay and are hired by a facility within 12 months, the state must provide for pro rata reimbursement.

Are there scholarships for CNA classes?

There are few national CNA scholarships, because most funding comes from employers and workforce programs. Check your local American Job Center for WIOA training funds and ask your school about Pell eligibility.

Does FAFSA cover CNA classes?

Only if the program is eligible for federal aid. Pell usually goes to degree-seeking undergraduates, though the Department of Education notes some eligible workforce programs qualify. Ask the school.
